Wrong Number
At 11:51am on Sunday, December 27, I got a phone call from a blocked number. I was eating with my family at the time, so I didn't answer. Moments later I received the following voicemail. Because the number was blocked, there's no way for me to call the person back to let him know he had the wrong number.
Jeremy, this is Ray Constaloni [sic]. Thank you for calling me and, uh, yeah, you're right. It wasn't a good day, and it's not a good day today either. But I love you and God bless you and I'm glad you're having- I didn't realize you were having a transplant. Anyway... anyway... Yeah, I just can't stop crying, Jeremy. So I'll hang up now. Bye bye.
Sorry, Ray.Monday, July 06, 2009
The Good News - 7/6/09

A man who lost his sight 12 years ago had it partially restored recently when doctors removed one of his teeth and implanted part of it into his eye. He'd never seen his wife, whom he married just four years ago. When it was time for the bandages to come off, he insisted that she be the first person he saw. 'The doctors took the bandages off and it was like looking through water and then I saw this figure and it was her. She's wonderful and lovely.'

Still Stuff
Okay. It's been awhile. The problem is, not many big or interesting things have been happening lately.
I turned 30. So I guess that's one, technically. Had a party. It was fun. Boob appearances have become a tradition.
Got an iPhone. Enjoying it very much.
But in terms of real 'life' stuff, unfortunately things are still in a bit of a holding pattern. I've got a couple of projects, none of which are quite at fruition yet. Though one is close! SO close! Ugh! And I cannot wait for it to be fruited.
Plus, I've gotten more serious about getting myself out there as a writer. In the last couple of months, I've sent in an entry for a screenwriting competition and, more importantly, applied for three writing fellowships. Getting any recognition for any of those things would be very nice.
So yeah. I'm still here, still working.

Time, Like A Sort Of Rhythmic Rhyme
Well, I think the apartment is pretty much set up the way we want it now. I did some work on the entertainment center, such as building two small shelving units (frankenstein'd from an IKEA plant holder and an old shelf) to hold the various pieces of entertaining equipment.

Plus I hung the rear surround speakers so that they're actually behind the couch, then ran the wires up through the attic so they didn't need to be stapled to the ceiling.

Then down to the TV covered by this aesthetically pleasing plastic strip.

I also finally hung one of the movie posters I've received (and had signed by the writers) over the years.

In the bedroom I replaced a broken pull switch on our already jury-rigged ceiling fan, so that we can have the fan on with the lights off, which hasn't been possible for the last few months. Luckily it's been 'winter.'

I also sanded down the bedroom door so that it no longer sticks.

And hell yes that is my signed picture of Rhonda from Starting Over there on the back of the bedroom door. "Be fearless!" Rhonda says. Fuck yeah!
In the hallway, I also sanded the doors of a cabinet that had never shut correctly. The good news is that the doors can now be closed at the same time without touching. The bad news is that one of the doors is so damned warped it still sticks out like crazy. Oh well.

In addition, I replaced a couple of old, two-prong, non-grounded outlets with the far more useful three-prong, grounded variety, breaking three drill bits in the process.

And I received the Hollywood Trash hats that I ordered awhile back.

I recently finished a very interesting book about the Sexual Revolution entitled Make Love, Not War: The Sexual Revolution, An Unfettered History by David Allyn.

It's amazing how fully realized the sexual revolution was, and how thoroughly it was destroyed in the 80s. Makes one fearful about the implications for the Green Revolution. Another set of values that seem like they should be common sense but for some reason need to be fought for.
Speaking of the Green Revolution, I've also been writing weekly posts for an environmental blog called The Golden Spiral. Check it out if you're interested.
There are other projects in the works. I started the Noisy Cricket amp I mentioned awhile back. Plus a writing project I've been undertaking with my friend Bob is about to come to completion (in first draft form, anyway). I'm making a coat hanger to go over a super cheapo IKEA lamp in our front room. Then there's the ever-present 'Complete DK' package I'm still putting together.
And Hollywood Trash has its first show in awhile on Thursday night.
So yeah. Busy. Good busy though. And you?

The Good News - 3/24/09

While performing brain surgery on a patient, Italian surgeon Claudio Vitale started feeling pains in his chest. Knowing his patient would never recover if the surgery was stopped, Dr. Vitale ignored his own heart attack to finish the procedure.
After completing the surgery, Dr. Vitale was treated for his heart attack with an angioplasty. The patient is said to be recovering.
